The problem of doing your own thing, sadly can too often mean also that it is harmful to yourself and still  also  next to the others. but there will be always the 30 percent hard core persons who will still vigorously support it..

For example: there is the false reasoning that the supposedly positive   benefits that “the increase use of  Marijuana might largely displace alcohol use, producing little or no net increase in intoxication but producing a safer society overall since pot is less damaging than alcohol”, is faulty at it’s core since Pot undeniable cause irreversible brain damages, leads to not just to an addiction too it like alcohol, but also similarly cause mental retardation in both cases.. Alcohol is still a basic  “stepping-stone drug” to other immoral acts, bad drug usages.. even if it is legal, cheap, potent. The people who take pot still tend to not stop consuming alcohol.. and other bad drugs too.. People who approve of their usages are stoned, or  then they must be just plain stupid! The myth that  people who use it cause no harm to other people is a myth still too..  The negative side effects of alcohol and bad drugs  are well know already…the false supposedly positive statements is an ostrich approach that  still neglects all of the other real negative realities.

There is always still the reality of the  warnings of the health risks of marijuana and alcohol usage, rightful warnings that cannot be ignored or dreamed away. .I can’t, for the life of me, understand how any normal, honest, rational person can, in good conscience, support the legal availability of alcohol, or any extremely harmful drug  as It’s quite baffling, contrary to good personal health care. in any case with the human tendency to excess like with anything, too much of  any thing can be still really  bad, harmful  to you  Smoking pot is different here too. . Even plain cigarette smoking is harmful to you as we all can know.

Alcohol is a poison that is detrimental to one’s health and all persons who take bad drugs and alcohol suffer undeniably irreversible brain damage, death of brain cells, become more and more mentally  retarded

These studies suggest that our emergency departments may have become safe havens for the worst drinking drivers, those drivers who are involved in fatal or personal injury crashes. They recover, get out of hospital, drive drunk again, and escape prosecution and conviction. It doesn’t take them long which is exactly why the conviction rate has to go up. Merely Ban the idiot from driving for the next 100 years and throw him in jail for five years. If proven to be impaired, the driver will be without insurance. they also will sue him to recover their losses, garnish his wages and put a lien on his house and anything else he owns. Jesus similarly taught about drunkenness:

The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers (Luke 12:45, 46).

The physical dangers of alcohol consumption include:
● Liver damage especially, but also brain, heart, bone marrow and gastrointestinal tract. Such can lead to cancer, high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, cirrhosis, nerve problems, etc. When the liver is affected nutrition is also adversely impacted which will hurt the entire body.

Four More Facts About Drunkenness
(1) It leads to debauchery:
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit (Eph. 5:18).
(2) It brings woe, sorrow, strife, complaints, needless bruises and bloodshot eyes:
Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine. Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper. Your eyes will see strange sights and your mind imagine confusing things. You will be like one sleeping on the high seas, lying on top of the rigging. “They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt! They beat me, but I don’t feel it!  When will I wake up so I can find another drink?” (Prov. 23:29-35)
(3) It reveals those who do get drunk as unwise:
Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise (Prov. 20:1).
(4) It disqualifies a person from spiritual leadership:

No man should adduce t  in favour of drinking wine unless he can prove that the wine Jesus made in the” water-pots” of Cana was just like the wine which he proposes to drink. There are ample Greek literary texts which negate the narrow definition of oinos as denoting only fermented wine as it did not have the taste or the intoxicating effect of ordinary wine, God did not make fermented juice.. New wine would be grape juice (or a grapeade) mode from grape syrup while old wine would be 2 to 3 years old Suffice it to say, the “better” wine of course does not in any way imply or demand a more alcoholic, or even an alcoholic, wine at all, there is not the slightest evidence that the word so used would have conveyed any idea but that of the pure juice of the grape,

John the Baptist did not drink wine or any other form of alcohol because Scripture prophesied that he wouldn’t (Luke 1:15). Most people don’t know where to draw the line between temperance and excess. Such people better abstain totally until they know they can “be temperate in all things.”

And the word used twice  for “good” wine is a Greek word which refers to something or someone morally excellent or intrinsically good, rather It was Christ who in the Old Testament gave the warning to Israel, that “Wine is a mocker,” so why would he make fermented grape juice? by creating alcoholic wine, Jesus would have been promoting drunkenness, which the Bible clearly identifies as sinful.

If Jesus made fermented wine, then the fact that the guests had become”well drunk” would have meant that Jesus endorsed excessive drinking. Too many have assumed that the Hebrew and Greek words translated as “wine” must have the same meaning that the modern usage meaning of the English word “wine” does. In the English language, the word “wine” originally was used to denote the juice of grapes, whether in a fermented or unfermented state. Long ago, of course, that word has taken on the usage meaning of only grape juice in its fermented state. That’s why today we distinguish the two drinks by using the terms “wine” and “grape juice.”

Exodus 12:15 and 13:7 forbid the very presence of “leaven” anywhere in the homes during Passover. The New Testament–in Matthew 16:12 and I Corinthians 5:7-8–provide the explanation by declaring that leaven is a symbol of evil. Leaven is a yeast, so the leavening process is parallel to the process of fermentation. In the light of these facts,plus Jesus’ statement in the disputed passages that the “fruit of the vine”represented His own saving blood, we must surely conclude that the communion cup did, and should always, contain unfermented (ie., uncorrupted) grape juice. The following Old Testament texts show God’s disapproval of wine, as “yayin:” Genesis 9:21; 19:32; Leviticus10:9-11; Deuteronomy 32:33; Psalm 60:3; Proverbs 4:17; 20:1; 23:20, 29-35;31:4-5; Isaiah 5:11-12; 28:7; Ezekiel 44:21; and Hosea 7:5. Proverbs 23:31-35–Again, the very nature of fermented wine is categorically condemned as a “serpent” and an “adder” that bites and stings.

The Bible condemns the use itself of all alcoholic beverages and highly recommends unfermented grape juice!  The only exception to this consistent rule in Scripture is Proverbs 31: 6-7, which commands that alcoholic beverages be given to those who are dying or cowards.

The assumption made by proponents of the moderate use of alcoholic beverages that the ancient peoples did not know how to preserve the juice of the grape in an unfermented state, and that therefore, virtually every instance of wine mentioned in the Bible must be to fermented wine.This assumption is totally false as the ancient historical records are abundantly clear that there were several major methods of preserving grape juice in its natural, unfermented state.

Since most people and Christians do not know or study the Bible today they are easily deceived.

You know I get a kick out of those lying spin  doctors,  police officers, bad cops, union representatives, police lovers, bad PERSONS   who STILL DO say that ALL OF  bad people, INCLUDING the ALCOHOLICS, the bad cops and their bad supervisors too they  can always be rehabilitated, retrained.. and how many millions of them now has this happened to them.. almost none.. a bad apple tends to get worse.. REGINA – Questions are being raised about why an RCMP sergeant in Saskatchewan who rolled his vehicle after having at least five alcoholic drinks was not charged with impaired driving. Sgt. Warren Gherasim was commander of the detachment in Cut Knife, about 170 kilometres west of Saskatoon, when, on May 15, 2006, he conducted himself “in a disgraceful manner that brings discredit on the force” by drinking and driving, says a decision by an RCMP adjudication board. “Sergeant Gherasim’s admission, the (indications) of impairment and the evidence of the odour of alcohol tip the balance in favour of finding that some level of alcohol impairment existed sufficient to contribute to the accident,” the board said in its ruling dated March 20, 2008. “Six different members attended the accident scene or Sgt. Gherasim’s residence, all but one subordinate to him in rank and four serving under him at Cut Knife. Several of these noted the odour of alcohol. “For a detachment commander, one of whose roles is to set an example, to drink enough and drive so that alcohol played a role in a subsequent accident, regardless of the fact that the circumstances were such that no breath demand was made, is disgraceful, and brings discredit on the force.” The adjudication report noted that Gherasim worked his scheduled shift on the day in question and drank two beers with a colleague while golfing. The pair stopped later at the colleague’s house and Gherasim had another beer. After watching a baseball game together, he had a “couple of drinks.” Gherasim has since apologized for his behaviour and been transferred to a different detachment, where he is handling administrative duties. He was given a reprimand, docked eight days’ pay and taken out of the Officer Candidate program. He was also stripped of the Order of Merit of Police Forces he received in 2006 from the Governor General for his work in community-based policing in the Northwest Territories and for fugitive investigations across the country.  Bill Pitt, an Edmonton-based criminologist, law enforcement instructor and former Mountie, called the incident “another nail in the coffin” for the RCMP. “This is not a standard of policing that Canadians should have. Does it occur? Canada clearly has two standards one for the ctizens, and another one for the civil and public servants.. guess who gets all the false breaks.. a paid leave now too..

I am sure charges will be laid in a year or so as opposed joe citizen who gets charged on the spot or within the same day/ week.
I do, however know some people who have been charged and it happens on the spot. There is no investigation to see if charges are warranted. They are charged right now so why not this officer? Why not Monte? No one law for the people and another for drunk cops..

Tarith Sehmbi, 36, was charged with second-degree murder in her slaying. He  will likely be suspended from his job within days as a result of the serious charge against him,  ” “The suspension will initially be with pay. That will be pending a review to consider the option of stopping the pay.” There’s no specific time frame for the review on whether to stop paying the constable’s salary. Sehmbi, who has been with the RCMP for about seven years, was working in the revenue generating traffic services division at a detachment in Stony Plain, Alta., just west of Edmonton.

EDMONTON—Alberta   Fri Jul 16 2010  The RCMP is finally requesting the public’s help in locating Travis Edward Vader, 38, as a person of interest in the disappearance of a couple Lyle McCann, 78, and Marie, 77  from St. Albert who have not been seen since they left home July 3 headed to British Columbia for a camping vacation. They were driving their motor home, towing behind them a green Hyundai Tucson SUV and finally they the RCMP  found the couple’s SUV . Two days after the motorhome was found burning in dense bush near Edson, 200 kilometres west of Edmonton. Assistant RCMP Commissioner Peter Hourihan   admitted they the RCMP had botched the early stages of the investigation into the case . One of the officers involved has been ordered out of the field and onto desk duty. “A couple of mistakes have been made, I acknowledge that,” Hourihan said  at a news conference at K Division headquarters. The McCanns now have been missing for almost two weeks and the investigation has seen the RCMP come under criticism for failing to conduct due diligence and follow obvious leads. Now the investigation went off the rails after the RCMP went to the burning motorhome. They found the McCanns’ registration papers in the camper and called the McCann home, but abandoned the chase when there was no answer and due diligence was not served and  a RCMP member asa direct result has been placed on administrative duties. So what!!! “The case took another bizarre turn on Tuesday after the McCann’s son, Bret, made a public plea on TV for the public to call in tips on the stolen SUV. Within hours Diana Bjorklund and her father Evert went to the local RCMP detachment in Prince George B.C., 450 kilometres west of Edson, to report seeing the SUV in the community a few days earlier. But Diana Bjorklund told CBC Radio on Thursday that the civilian staffer at the counter didn’t ask for her name and phone number and dismissed her information out of hand because the sighting was already days old. Mounties were then forced to issue a public plea for Bjorklund to come back. Off-duty RCMP officer arrested for River Heights break-in CTV.ca –  An off-duty RCMP officer was arrested for allegedly breaking into a River Heights home while intoxicated on Thursday, said Winnipeg police. An investigation determined that a suspect in an intoxicated state broke in through the front door to a stranger’s residence in River Heights and woke up a person inside, said officers. A neighbour told CTV News the suspect fell asleep on a couch inside the home. The neighbour said the suspect believed he was at a hotel and even left his shoes at the door before falling asleep on the couch. Winnipeg police responded and took the suspect into custody.  The 30-year-old male suspect faces a charge for forcible entry and has been released on a court appearance notice. His name has not been released.

OTTAWA (CBC) – Gatineau police ended a 10-hour standoff Monday morning without making an arrest.  Police said they found the suspect of a weekend robbery at a residence on Ste-Rédempteur Street and that he refused to surrender. They later returned with a warrant to search the residence but chose not to enter because of the suspect’s history. Instead, police erected a security cordon and closed off Ste-Redempteur between Allard and Ste. Etienne streets until about 11 a.m., at which time they ended the operation without making an arrest. The top investigating body The RCMP itself now becomes really  dumb , stupid when presenting any information about it’s own bad cops. “No information presently available at the present”, “further information will be forthcoming when the charges are actually laid, “is the  too typical perverse RCMP public relationship spins, cover ups now as well. Reality is that too often you cannot trust the RCMP now to do it’s job when needed still.

Too many police officers are now too often guilty of their most serious neglect of public trust and their duty. The related truth is that neither an independent police investigation, a new police commissioner,  a promised provincial or federal investigation, or just more politicians promises too often still   will not bring the much needed justice. All of the governments can prohibit the initial and further employment of any known racists for any jobs, and can  punish them for their racists acts, views. Police managers continue to promise the reforming of bad cops and the bad cops keep killing, abusing  innocent persons. The possible retaining of bad  police officers is always anyway a false myth. What thus is always needed is the real  the dismissal, criminal prosecution, of the guilty cops. So where is it? in regard to toughest impaired-driving laws in the country

 

New laws target drinking drivers Victoria Times Colonist -Victoria, BC – The BC government moved Tuesday to establish what it says are the toughest impaired-driving laws in the country. Under legislation that critics say will “decriminalize” drunk driving, police will have new discretion to immediately ban a person from driving and impose a fine — even if their blood-alcohol level doesn’t break any criminal laws. People who blow a “warn” on a roadside screening device will face a $200 fine and a three-day driving ban. At present, they would only receive a 24-hour suspension for registering a blood-alcohol level between .05 and .08 per cent, the level at which it becomes a criminal offence to get behind the wheel. The new penalties escalate to a $300 fine and a seven-day ban for the second “warn” in five years, and $400 and a 30-day ban for the third.  Those drivers who “fail” a roadside test because their blood-alcohol level is over .08 could now receive an immediate 90-day driving ban and a $500 fine in addition to any criminal charges. There is currently no administrative penalty and the driving ban doesn’t take effect for three weeks.

and why is there here too no single cohesive drunk driving law for all of Canada, not just piece meal laws in every different province? A national approach  would be much more effective than 10 provinces all trying to cut their own laws.  The federal government has been strangely quiet on this subject too. It’s time that changed. Tell them so now too.
Majority of accidents are caused by the drunk drivers firstly still. Police do not regularly, actively, year around purse them and why?  More people die from alcohol, drugs, hospital neglect, and yet more money is being paid on catching mainly the  speeders.. Montreal pedestrians hit by drunk driver on New Year’s Day   Man in critical condition after SUV veers onto sidewalk   The Gazette January  1, 2010 MONTREAL – Two pedestrians were seriously injured downtown this morning by a drunk driver. The man who was hit, 25, is reportedly in critical condition while the woman, 50, is considered stable, police said. The SUV was headed east on Ste. Catherine St. W. around 4 a.m. when the driver swerved, possibly to avoid to another vehicle. He hit another car and rolled onto the sidewalk between Crescent St. and de la Montagne St., striking the victims. The driver and passenger of the vehicle were uninjured. Police arrested the driver and brought him back to the police station for an alcohol test, which he failed. Police suspect it was the combination of alcohol, speed and weather that caused the accident. If the law was in favourofthe victims this guy would lose his license permanently and would get min 15 yrs in jail. He knew he drank, he can afford an suv but to cheap and arrogant to take a taxi. I feel sorry for the victims and I feel sorry for the JA because a simple 20 cab ride and he would never have to go through this, or use the operation neige rouge…its a free service you are a moron ”  the Gazette

Only “Tiny number of police officers part of large drinking and driving problem   Sun Nov 9, 12:03 PM   VANCOUVER, B.C. – The numbers are staggering.  Mothers Against Drunk Driving says 75,000 people are arrested annually in Canada for drinking and driving.  There are an additional 100,000 to 150,000 24-hour suspensions handed out each year by police, said MADD chief executive officer Andy Murie.  Sometimes the people who make those arrests, the front-line police officers who try to get the drunks off the road become – albeit rarely – part of the statistics.  “You might find 10 to 15 incidents a year involving police officers,” said Murie in a recent interview from his Oakville, Ont., office.  “The thing is that with the 10 to 15, because they are police officers and they get charged with a crime, it’s news.”  Often front-page news, most recently in British Columbia.  In recent weeks, the public learned that three B.C. police officers are facing drunk-driving charges – two members of the RCMP and a third from the New Westminster police department.  One of the off-duty RCMP members was arrested for drunk driving after a Jeep collided with a motorcycle, killing a 21-year-old man in Delta, B.C.  Other high-profile cases this year across the country include an Edmonton police officer facing one count of driving with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit and five counts each of impaired driving causing bodily harm and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.  In Saskatoon, a judge will decide the fate later this month of a senior member of the Saskatoon police service charged with impaired driving.  At his trial, two arresting officers testified that Insp. Al Stickney got behind the wheel after they observed him drunkenly staggering across the street.  “This year there’s been about 10 (arrests),” said Murie. “That’s pretty normal for a year.”  ..  the number of police officers caught drinking and driving is a tiny percentage of the total  ..   Benedikt Fischer, a criminologist at the faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University, said police officers are recruited “from the human race and despite the fact we expect so, human behaviour doesn’t stop on-or off-duty.”  Fischer also believes the number of police officers who drive drunk is probably higher than the arrest statistics indicate.  Being a cop is part of a “professional or police culture” dominated by machismo and camaraderie where police officers spend a lot of time socializing with each other, said Fischer, and often it involves alcohol.  “Drinking among police officers is often quite extensive and excessive, probably more so than in other professions,” he said.  When an RCMP member in B.C. is identified as having a drinking problem, he or she gets to know Dr. Ian MacDonald, the regional health services officer for RCMP in B.C.  After an assessment, they might be referred outside the force to an independent addiction specialist.  Whether it’s determined they have a drinking problem or not, all RCMP members arrested for drinking and driving come to MacDonald’s attention and must have an assessment.  MacDonald also thinks that MADD’s numbers are low and that the number of police officers arrested for drunk driving is higher than 10 to 15.  “That strikes me as low. If you look at B.C., we might have two or three charges a year. And if B.C. is 10 per cent of the population, that would be 20 to 30 across Canada.”  Mark Berber, a lecturer in psychiatry at the University of Toronto and an assistant professor at Queen’s University, is also skeptical of the MADD figures.  “It’s surprisingly low considering the stress these guys and gals are under.”  Studies, he said, have suggested that police officers have one of the most stressful jobs and “unfortunately a small number may seek to reduce their anxiety and stress by having a drink.”  He has counselled police officers in his private practice.  “They have spoken about seeking relief from stress and through medication and also drinking,” Berber said.  RCMP members who get caught drinking and driving, in addition to the court process, must endure an internal code of conduct investigation, said RCMP spokeswoman Const. “  We only read/see about the few due to the police buddy system which will leave all but the most blatant of the cops drunk (ie involved in an accident) either being escorted home, or not even bothering to perform the breathe analysis. Meanwhile after another drunken orgy the Edmonton Oilers hockey team  fight with restaurant over New Year’s Eve bill  Fri Jan 1, 6:47 PM  The management of a high-end Calgary restaurant got into a bitter dispute over New Year’s Eve bash bill racked up by members of the Edmonton Oilers team, says the fine dining owner. Maurizio Terrigno of Osteria de Medici,  said the team and staff owed $16,796.39 but paid only $12,385.45. About half of the bill is for alcohol which totalled to $8,248.  Oilers spokesman Allan Watt said the restaurant was recommended by some Calgary friends of the players and they had a prearranged meal and menu. “They received the bill which they felt was outrageous,” said Watt. “They inquired about it and they were unhappy about it and were unhappy with some of the charges. The restaurant adjusted it by $7,000,” he said. Watt said the players paid the adjusted bill and added a $1,900 tip and left the restaurant. The restaurant tried to charge for a bottle of an imported expensive brandy after one of the players took a swig straight from it. “They refused to pay for the whole bottle because they didn’t consume the whole bottle,” said Terrigno. He said there’s no way the restaurant will serve other clients from the same bottle of brandy. Marijuana can cause the heart beat to increase by 20 to 50 beats per minute, and can increase even more if other drugs are used at the same time. Because of the lower blood pressure and higher heart rate, researchers found that users’ risk for a heart attack is four times higher within the first hour after smoking marijuana, compared to their general risk of heart attack when not smoking.

so tell me, do tell us all  again why the police do not go after the drunk drivers more, and when they do it is only 2 months of the year, December and January, when the alcoholics do stay alcoholics all year and likely drive impaired still all year too.. so why does the police fill up the courts with the fast buck, revenue generating traffic tickets, helping the insurance firms to get more money too by increasing the insurance rates??? The cops, RCMP too should really now  spend more time on putting into jail all the alcoholics who drive, but also allof the bad civil and public servants, politicians,  and bad citizens who abuse the taxpayers money rather firstly too. And why are they not doing it? Cause even they abuse the taxpayers monies too? and the likely fact that half of the cops are also drunks..
 
A  survey of Ontario policing  found that, on average, a police officer laid 2.5 drinking driving charges per year. The study suggests several reasons for low enforcement rates:
not enough personnel (small towns only have one patrol unit that has to be available for emergencies and cannot be sidetracked by an impaired driving situation)
– time-consuming arrest proceedings (including the availability of a technician for BAC  testing)
-attitudes of officers and administrators (not a serious crime, too time-consuming)
– the court system (many forms to process the charge, mistakes lead to acquittals)
-amount of paperwork required (2 hour average to do paperwork) (Vingilis, 1991, 202)

Research ALSO found a significant divergence in the punishments given to impaired drivers BY THE POLICE AND THE COURTS, locally and Canada wide too.

In an average year in Canada, impaired driving killed 1,212 persons, injured 71,532, and caused damage to 236,375 vehicles, translating into 1,010 fatal crashes, 48,890 injury-only crashes and 155,510 property-damage only (PDO) crashes, totaling an average of 205,410 crashes in all. In turn, on average, this cost Canadians between $1.90 billion (Real Dollar Estimate model) and $11.28 billion (Willingness to Pay model) dollars, depending on the costing model and assumptions used. To put this another way, that represents a cost of between about $59.00 and $341.00 per Canadian. EXCLUDING THE EXTRA COSTS FOR INSURANCE NOW TOO..

In 2006, it was estimated that about 368,396 individuals were injured in motor vehicle crashes. MADD Canada estimates that approximately 75,374 of these individuals were injured in impaired driving crashes (207 per day). Note that this figure does not include impaired crash injuries occurring on the water or snowmobiling.

It is very interesting that when most of the news reporters, governments tend to write about heart attacks, or car accidents they seem to downplay, omit alcohol’s effect and why is that?

On the surface, at least, Canadians  appear to be among the healthiest in the country when it comes to cardiovascular disease.  But the realties  are deceiving and paint a much different picture once you look into them. Twenty-two per cent of them smoke, 60 percent of them drink alcohol, 50 per cent are overweight or obese and 67 per cent do not eat a healthy diet. Many persons have often, continually unresolved negative personal stress   All of these factors contribute to high blood pressure — and they are entirely preventable, or deal able with.  A lot of what we perceive to be healthy eating and doing actually isn’t.  For starters, all persons people should shake their addiction to salty, packaged meals. reduce their red meat consumptions, reduce their meal sizes, eat more regularly too, One of the biggest problems is the high amount of sodium in our food,” This salt encourages water in the blood to remain, and gives more work for the heart to pump. Everyone does have  responsibilities, parents, spouses, food distributors as do governments and food manufacturers. Now  it’s about all of us doing a better job to increase public awareness and promoting more lifestyle changes around being healthy. According to the World Health Association, high blood pressure is the leading risk for death in the world.  Hypertension is the leading cause of heart and stroke disease, but there are no obvious symptoms.  Now  regular Doctor checkups,  with a competent and not too often a pretentious doctor too, to screen for hypertension, Diabetes as well  are required since studies suggest will affect half of all Canadians by the time they turn 60.  Over time, high blood pressure can damage blood vessel walls causing scarring that promotes the buildup of plaque deposits, which narrow and eventually block blood flow. Increased blood pressure can lead to heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure and other diseases that many persons next do die from. One in five Canadians has high blood pressure — and many  Canadians are among the least likely in the country to take measures to lower it. Only  80 per cent of the 4.6 million Canadians with hypertension take medication to control it, according to new findings from Statistics Canada. Doing things like having a  healthy diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in saturated fat is very effective, as is regular physical activity and maintaining a healthy body weight.  The prevalence of high blood pressure was about the same in men as in women, but men were less likely to be aware of their condition. The numbers should give all cause for concern.

Healthy adults should have a blood pressure in the range of 120/80 mmHg, although that target varies with age and other health conditions. There are many DIFFERENT factors that contribute to high blood pressure, including first the type of one’s food consumption, too much read meat, not enough fruit and vegetables,  being overweight, a lack of physical activity, excessive sodium consumption and aging. Hypertension, while it has few obvious symptoms, is a leading risk factor for heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease. TORONTO, ONTARIO Facing pressure to release more details about alleged fraud or wrongdoing investigated by the auditor-general, the city revealed that it had fired three staff and suspended 10 others without pay. But the city would not say for which among a list of allegations in the report, including theft and improperly cancelled parking tickets, the employees were punished. Meanwhile, in a separate case of alleged fraud, the city announced it had fired nine staff it had sent home with pay last month for allegedly filing false health-benefit claims and pocketing the cash. However, the mayor and city officials would not say how much, saying it could jeopardize a police probe into the allegations, uncovered by the company that administers the city’s benefits, Manulife Financial. The report includes allegations that employees improperly cancelled parking tickets, worked $50,000 in “excessive overtime,” viewed pornography on city computers, wrongly recommended private contractors to homeowners and rented their own apartments to social-services recipients. Pressed by reporters, Mr. Miller said three of the employees facing allegations in the auditor-general’s report were terminated, one resigned, and another 10 were suspended without pay. Mr. Ford, like other members of the audit committee, received a confidential briefing on the punishments behind closed doors but was “severely warned” not to share what he learned. He accused the mayor of trying to keep a lid on the allegations and the city of being too soft on the accused employees: “It’s coming from the top.”

Drunk driving arrests jump. Calgary Herald February 6, 2009 –  More than 65 people –three times as many as last year –were arrested in January for drunk driving in red deer as part of a stepped-up check stop program. From Jan. 1 to 31, Red Deer RCMP, along with Alberta sheriffs and the Alberta office of traffic safety, arrested 65 people, compared with 20 people in 2008. Const.  It is estimated that 70 percent of adults drink alcohol and at least 15 percent of Canadians are alcoholics.  According to the 2004 Canadian Addiction Survey, 79.3% of the Canadian population aged 15 years and older consumed alcohol in the year prior to the survey. Drunk driving check stops thus should be enforced all year not just during December and January. Increased funding for check stops is not required also, merely reduce the number of speeding/traffic cops and put them mostly rather on drunk driving detail. Since we know that most of accidents are not even caused by speeding now in the first place too. Speeding tickets and related quotas  tend to be a false revenue generating items . Installing a 15-hundred-dollar breath-sampling device and ignition interlock on vehicles seems to be not totally effective since it seem many now have learned how to by pass it.. by having someone else breath into it, or .. Too many cops still do  go after revenue generating speeding tickets and why? Any traffic ticket on your driving record may adversely affect your insurance rates. Insurance companies also rely on “accident settlement” charts and police accident reports to determine who is “at fault” and base rates upon claims made by the insured.

OPP says highway crash numbers up this winter  Sunday, February 8th, 2009 9:25 am  ( but they lie as to the reasons) If you have been stuck in more closures on the highways this year because of crashes, you’ve been part of a growing trend.   Crashes on OPP highways have been skidding out of control this year, topping last years list.  The OPP is reporting an increase in crashes this winter compared to last. OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford says that during the months of December and January the number of collisions has risen.  The OPP responded to over 17,000 crashes on OPP patrolled highways in the last two months. Sgt. Woodford says not to blame the weather for the collisions, but drivers not driving according to road conditions, such as speeding and following too closely. While the number of crashes are up, there has been a slight decline in automobile deaths and serious injuries.  47 deaths occurred on OPP patrolled highways compared to 48 last year and 65 two years ago. Sgt. Stimulant drugs, such as caffeine, amphetamines and cocaine, may increase alertness, but this does not mean they improve driving skills. The tired driver who drinks coffee to stay awake on the road should be aware that the stimulant effect can wear off suddenly, and that the only remedy for fatigue is to pull off the road, and sleep. Amphetamines do not seem to affect driving skills when taken at medical doses, but they do make some people over-confident, which can lead to risky driving. Higher doses of amphetamines often make people hostile and aggressive.

People who use cocaine are also likely to feel confident about their driving ability. But cocaine use affects vision, causing blurring, glare and hallucinations. “Snow lights” — weak flashes or movements of light in the peripheral field of vision — tend to make drivers swerve toward or away from the lights. People who use cocaine may also hear sounds that aren’t there, such as bells ringing, or smell scents that aren’t there, such as smoke or gas, which distract them from their driving.

Cannabis impairs depth perception, attention span and concentration, slows reaction time, and decreases muscle strength and hand steadiness — all of which can affect a person’s ability to drive safely.

When people involved in traffic accidents were tested for the presence of drugs in a 1992 study, the drug found most often was alcohol. However, the total number of positive test results for all drugs other than alcohol was greater than the number of positive test results for alcohol alone. After alcohol, the most commonly detected drugs were cannabis, benzodiazepines and cocaine.

Studies have found that people who have been convicted of impaired driving offenses come from many different backgrounds, age and income groups. Such studies have also identified certain characteristics of people who drink and drive. Looking at convicted drinking drivers, we see that

  • most are male
  • a high proportion are “heavy” drinkers
  • many have an “antisocial attitude,” meaning they lack respect for the law and the safety of others, and
  • of those who are convicted of drinking and driving, almost all report having driven while under the influence many times before.

Impaired driving of any vehicle is a criminal offense with strict penalties under federal and provincial law. It ALSO THUS seems someone is not telling us the true figures of the number of people unemployed in Canada, Ontario firstly, the recession did not just start this year.. especially since the people on welfare are generally no longer counted as unemployed.. A recent TD Economics report warned that homeowners in struggling Ontario communities may be hit with big property-tax hikes to cover rising welfare costs during the recession. The report singled out Toronto, but TD economist and co-author Derek Burleton said other municipalities will face similar financial pressures as the economy sours. In its budget plan released Tuesday, Toronto signalled that residential property taxes will rise by four per cent in 2009. Mayor David Miller cited higher costs for transit, policing, snow clearance (* this  explains why there have been more road accidents in Ontario now too, 17000 in the last 2 months, since Ontario’s roads have not been immediately cleared of the snow it seems..) and welfare in defending the hike. Municipalities can’t go into deficits, but the provincial government can. Municipalities currently pay 20 per cent of welfare benefits, but they also administer the program, and the province has capped increases to its share of those administrative costs, Burleton noted in his report. 

Windsor, Ont., has been struggling for years to find a way out of a severe economic downturn that began in 2002, said Mayor Eddie Francis.  As manufacturing jobs disappeared, welfare caseloads started to “skyrocket” in 2005, he said.  With Windsor’s jobless rate hitting 11 per cent – the highest in Canada – more people are turning to welfare and other social programs as their unemployment benefits run out, Francis said.  As the costs of maintaining those programs go up, the amount of tax revenue the city is collecting is plunging, he added.  * “We’re at a point right now where… we’ve cut to the bone in terms of city services,” Francis said.  Last year, the city lost about $15 million in tax revenue – the equivalent of a four per cent tax hike – because property values are falling and companies are shuttering plants and factories, Francis said.  The loss of a GM plant alone would cost the city $3 million in much-needed tax revenue, he added.  Speeding up the provincial upload of costs from municipalities and the arrival of much-needed federal cash for infrastructure projects would ease financial burden many cities and towns are facing, he said.  “Everything is needed right now – all the tools,” he said.  http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/090211/national/ont_municipalities_welfare

Former Liberal prime minister Paul Martin complained Stephen Harper was too slow in bringing forward a stimulus package, saying the government should have acted before Christmas. “I think the situation is very worrisome and I think that when you see these job numbers it’s a pity that we didn’t begin with the stimulus much earlier,” Martin said of a $40-billion plan MPs approved in principle last week.  “The quicker you get at this kind of thing, the better off you are. I also think it’s very important the kind of stimulus that you engage in.”

Here is what I know for sure in Canada proper policing, management ,  supervision  human rights commissions are a real fact of life, society, in schools, life,  in churches, governments, commerce, institutions, civil and public services, professional services too,  and elsewhere, even on the net,  for you will always have those 30 percent at least of the persons who will try to cheat, lie  , steal, bend the rules, falsely believe they are above the laws, Self  regulation alone is too often pretentious, farcical, often not applied as well. A new law that takes effect today in the province of British Columbia, Canada that now will find convicted impaired drivers breathing into a tube if they want to start their vehicle after serving a mandatory driving ban. The law will force installation of a 15-hundred-dollar breath-sampling device and ignition interlock on vehicles for at least year with the impaired driver bearing the cost. The devices will be required for anyone completing an impaired-driving prohibition, including two 90-day bans or three 24-hour roadside suspensions within a five-year period. The government says research shows the breath-test devices sharply cut the rate of repeat drunk-driving offences. For some reasons BC seems to leads the nation in drug usage and impaired driving, Alcoholism now too.. Now if they would also apply this law to the RCMP itself .

Top Ten Excuses For Drinking & Driving 

1 “I can handle my liquor”

– According to police, this one typically applies to the “macho” variety of men who feel their exaggerated sense of manliness enables them to overcome the effects of alcohol. Trouble is, there’s no physiological evidence to support that claim – alcohol is a drug, and if you drink it, your mind and body will immediately feel the effects. Drink too much, and you will be impaired – no matter how big, tough or macho you think you are.

 
2. “I don’t want to pay for a taxi”

– Depending on the distance travelled, you could indeed face a significant cost to get home in a taxi. But compared to the cost of losing your licence, injuring or killing someone, it’s a small amount to pay for a safe ride home. Other options if your celebrations involve alcohol: share a cab, take transit, walk or assign a designated driver. Whatever the option you take, you need to plan ahead. Ask a friend, co-worker or your partner to stay sober, or make arrangements beforehand to have someone come get you after the party ends. Alternatively, stay at a hotel or friend’s house where the celebration is taking place.

3.“Leaving my car overnight is a hassle”

– Going back to the bar or party location the next day to retrieve your vehicle can indeed be a burden but having your car impounded at a police roadcheck is an even bigger hassle. 4. “I always make it home after a few”

– Each year in British Columbia, approximately 120 people don’t make it home due to alcohol-related collisions. The drivers who survive those collisions often tell police afterwards that they had very little to drink and really didn’t think they were impaired, despite the fact their blood-alcohol levels were well over the legal limit. Impairment begins with the first drink. And the risk of crashing and killing yourself and others increases with each alcoholic drink consumed.

5.“It’s only a short drive home”

– If that’s the case, your taxi fare will be minimal. Remember: CounterAttack roadchecks are often set-up outside drinking establishments – so no matter how close to home you may be, you might still encounter a friendly, neighbourhood roadcheck.

6.“I’m OK to drive”

– Are you really? Alcohol affects your judgment. How many people over the course of human history have learned that the hard way? And how many lives have been lost or permanently damaged through the bad judgment of drunk drivers? It’s simple – if you drink, don’t drive.

7.“One more drink won’t hurt”

– Wrong. Every drink you consume adds to your level of impairment. The “just one more” mentality can often lead to many more, as people get caught up in the spirit of celebration.

8.“They only take your licence if you’re drunk”

– Imagine for a moment that every person at a sold-out Canucks game has their licence suspended and their car impounded. Then imagine that same arena filled to capacity for another game – and once again, every person in the building has their licence suspended and their car impounded. That’s the approximate number (more than 38,000) of drivers each year in British Columbia who are caught by police when their ability to drive is affected by alcohol or drugs. Like the sign says at GM Place: “If you drink, don’t drive.”

9.“I’m more careful after a couple”

– That’s like saying you’re more intelligent after sniffing glue. It makes no sense. Alcohol affects your reaction time, decision-making, coordination and visual functions; your ability to steer, track moving objects and brake appropriately; and your ability to control your speed and lane position. The more you drink, the worse you drive.

10.“I wasn’t drinking/only smoked a joint”

– Another urban myth that has no bearing in reality. Numerous studies have shown that “stoned” drivers who have taken drugs other than alcohol including cannabis, cocaine and even prescription drugs can be every bit as dangerous as drunk drivers. And new legislation now allows police to test drivers they suspect may be drug-impaired; if convicted, they face the same penalties as alcohol-impaired drivers.

What’s Going To Be Your Excuse? Impaired drivers can face a range of penalties, including immediate
24-hour roadside suspensions and vehicle impoundment, 90-day driving prohibitions, fines, mandatory rehabilitation, ignition interlock, criminal charges and jail time. With the introduction of ICBC’s Driver Risk Premium, drivers who have one or more impaired driving convictions and/or two or more roadside suspensions will pay more for their insurance.

 
So don’t make any excuses . Remember that impairment starts with the first drink, so plan ahead for a safe ride home.
