So the Conservative Party slams door in media’s face — again.. Sparring between the Prime Minister’s Office and the Parliamentary Press Gallery is hardly new. But the gloves came off on Wednesday when a dispute over access to a government caucus meeting turned into a Conservative fundraising pitch. Most of the media gallery refused to show up for Harper’s speech to caucus members on Wednesday when his office insisted on allowing only photographers and TV cameras to attend — no reporters. RCMP restrain Chinese reporter. Li, the newspaper’s bureau chief and a former Washington correspondent, says the communications staff initially gave him the indication he would be called upon, but then revoked it just before the prime minister’s availability. The Prime Minister’s Office limits the number of questions during public events and other journalists on the tour offered Li the opportunity to query Harper. When staff refused to recognize him, Li tried to take the microphone, triggering a tussle involving one of the prime minister’s communication officers that ended with him being hauled to the back of the room by RCMP security staff. Li and another Chinese-language journalist, Xinhua news bureau chief Dacheng Zhang, have complained they were being unfairly kept away from tour events made accessible to Canadian journalists. Li, an accredited member of the parliamentary press gallery, said he wanted to ask what was Canada’s stand on Chinese investment and foreign takeovers — an issue that has been up in the air since the Conservative government approved the purchase by the state-owned China National Offshore Oil Corporation of Nexen.Three RCMP officers were nearby and grabbed him. The highly trained unit is deployed wherever the prime minister goes and travels with him in order to protect him, though it is unclear what risk, if any, they believed Li posed. Li said the RCMP officers “said I couldn’t ask a question. A veteran TV cameraman was next not allowed to travel to Malaysia with the prime minister this week .Earlier today, Stephen Harper’s office appeared poised to scratch CTV journalist Dave Ellis from the scheduled already trip because he asked an impromptu question during a media event last week in New York. Ellis asked Harper about the charges laid against then-Conservative MP Dean Del Mastro, even though reporters and photographers had been told questions were not allowed . Harper leaves Thursday for a seven-day trip to Malaysia and Indonesia, and CTV had Ellis accredited to work on the assignment as a pool cameraman. But following Ellis’s New York assignment, CTV said it was told by the PMO that Ellis would not be allowed on Harper’s plane, even though he had earlier been approved for the trip. -The TV networks fought back, insisting that they — not the Prime Minister’s Office — should decide who to assign to cover Harper when he travels abroad. Accountability, for most governments, involves sharing the information they want to share and restricting access to information they find uncomfortable or even threatening. Accessibility and transparency are expensive in many ways; the actual system can cost taxpayers, and the results can cost politicians personally. That being said, the value of a government that is willing to both take credit for its successes and admit when it has made mistakes should not be underestimated. That sort of government, at least, believes its citizens deserve the fullest and broadest accounting possible — in other words, it treats citizens as equals, able to rationally examine a government’s performance, rather than simpletons who have to be led by the nose with only the best of good news. Prime Minister’s Office tipped on access to information requests in Senate spending scandal OTTAWA — Federal bureaucrats notified Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s chief of staff in June that they were about to make public that a search of the Privy Council Office had not uncovered a single document related to the scandal involving Sen. Mike Duffy. A briefing note to Ray Novak, released to Postmedia News under the access to information law, shows that Harper’s right-hand man was informed on June 25 about the answer to be sent imminently to an access-to-information request. On the same day, PCO bureaucrats sent the Prime Minister’s Office the “red files” — the term used for flagged requests that could be politically sensitive or damaging to a department or minister. Three days later, a response was sent out to the requester — Liberal MP Ralph Goodale — that the PCO had not found any documents in its “control or custody” related to Duffy, Sen. Pamela Wallin’s expenses, or any emails between Duffy and Harper’s former chief of staff, Nigel Wright. That response was the first of many handed out over the summer as information requests, which any Canadian can file, came back with negative responses. At Public Works and Government Services Canada, according to documents released to Postmedia News, officials asked why there were no records regarding Duffy’s cheque to the Senate that repaid his improper housing expenses, which they called a “hot issue” requiring a response. “Everyone who looked at it is scratching their heads,” Goodale said. “There’s no paper trail here at all. A former cop with an exemplary record is going public about what he calls corruption in Edmonton police ranks, after he tried internally to expose what he believes is organized brutality, but got no results.”I stood up for what’s right, and I just got run out of the police service,” said Derek Huff, 37. “I still can’t even really believe it.” Huff is a 10-year-veteran who resigned in February, three years after he said he and his partner watched — stunned — as three plainclothes officers viciously beat a handcuffed man while he was down. “They basically had their knees on his back and were just punching and kicking him just as hard as they could …six fists just pummelling this guy … I could hear him screaming,” said Huff. Most Jewish Americans say they have ‘no religion’ showing a trend towards secular Jewish identity in the U.S., the report finds. The emotional attachment to Israel has held steady over the last decade, with 69 percent of respondents saying they feel attached or very attached to Israel. While most of those surveyed by Pew said they felt a strong connection to Israel, and 23 percent reported having visited the Jewish state more than once, the respondents expressed significant reservations about the current Israeli government’s policies vis-a-vis the Palestinians. Forty-four percent said West Bank settlement construction hurts Israel’s security interests, and only 17 percent said continued settlement construction is helpful to Israeli security. Thirty-eight percent of respondents said the Israeli government is making a sincere peace effort with the Palestinians.
